Proto Amalgam

Nobody knows where Amalgams come from, or how they came to be. Throughout human history they were discovered in many places, from ancient ruins to underwater, deep caves, high on mountaintops and many other common, as well as uncommon, places.

They exhibit signs of life, sometimes they twitch, move a limb, an eye or emit a sound. No modern technology is able to penetrate and see inside what they are made of. The exterior is not uniform for all of them. No matter the complexion, none allow any x-ray, MRI or other scanning technology to penetrate inside. It is not known how they sustain themselves, since each amalgam found so far has exhibited similar behaviour. They seemingly do not try to communicate, but simply just are.

One of them is this "Proto Amalgam", as it was the first one to be discovered by humans, and aptly named. Found in a deep dark cave where no light penetrates, seemingly suspended in air and looking as if there is light illuminating it. But to the surprise of the explorers, there were no lights, and the lights that are seemingly illuminating the amalgam did not affect anyone else but the amalgam itself. It stays in that cave to this day, watched meticulously and studied.

So far, all the research seems to be futile. Nothing concrete has been discovered, except that every amalgam seems to have some sort of machinery attached to it that serves an unknown purpose.
